Change The World, Create Something!

Phew......

For the past 18months ive been on a programme called the Young Curators programme, and it is a programme designed by Cape Africa Platform whereby they selected 5 young people from different cities in South Africa and trained them to become professional art curators and I happened to be one of them. Part of the programme was that each curator would travel to one country in Africa and one country in Europe and do an internship with different art institutiions and so we did. Also went for art history lessons, visited a lot of galleries and did a lot of research on South African art.

At the end of the programme each curator had to propose an exhibition to curate as part of the Cape09 Biennale which is currently running in Cape Town. And one of my collegues Lerato proposed a mobile exhibition called Thank You Driver and it happens inside taxis in the city and i proposed a lil something in memory of Brenda Fassie which takes place in Langa High School. The idea was to make art accesible to everyone and also get the youth interested and so i thought a high school was a perfect spot. I did a lot of research on Brenda Fassie and found out a lot interesting things about her and also we did workshops with the learners from the school where we invited a fashion designer, industrial designer and performance artist to put together a little something with them which also became part of the exhibition. Also worked with local Graffiti Artists and designers and they created new works for the exhibition.

The kids loved doing the workshop and it was a lot of fun working with them, they are a very talented bunch and will continue to work with them. This has been an amazing experience for me and it was great to be able to take art into different spaces instead of your usual gallery.
