Random Act of Music 18: Freddie Gibbs @ Highline Ballroom (+ Mickey Factz Bonus VID)

I was skeptical of the electro-hip-pop line up upon entering Highline Ballroom to check out Mid Western rapper, Freddie Gibbs, thinking he was a rapper right? I could have sworn on the research I did that I wouldn't see him on stage with Tan Lines, Gordon Voidwell, and the other acts of the night. In the end it proved to bring in a diverse crowd that learned about few new things about each other musically.

Gibbs hails from post M.J. Gary, Indiana where crime rates are high and you learn early on to protect yourself. All of which are reflected in his flow and street credible lyrics. He reminded me of an early DMX (sort of) and took me back to a time when newscasters would refer to all Hip Hop as "gangster rap". Not looking for another diamond encrusted rapper, I welcomed the throwback vibe and honesty Freddie Gibbs reflected on stage.
