SOCIETY HAE

Change The World, Create Something!

In the same vein as sci-fi films such as District 9 and The Matrix, Pumzi begins with an ambitious concept. “A friend and I pondered the possibility of living in a place where we paid for air,” explained Wanuri Kahiu, writer and director of Pumzi. “We invented the city, the virtual natural museums, the people.” This brainstorm blossomed into Kahiu’s dazzling short film, Pumzi (Air).

In Pumzi, Kahiu’s vision is fully realized. From its opening scene, where a synthetic voice prompts a woman to take her dream suppressant, this twenty-minute film astounds. Pumzi transports viewers to a slick, gun-mental gray future--Africa, thirty-five years after World War III, the indoor community of Maitu. In this future, nature is believed to be extinct and, because of its scarcity, water is rationed. The receipt of a mysterious soil sample by Asha (Kudzani Moswela), curator at Maitu’s virtual natural history museum, challenges the idea that no life exists in the outside world.

Beyond the genius of its plot and the beauty of its cinematography, Pumzi’s triumph is its skillful handling of larger-than-life concepts. Kahiu avoids bashing viewers over the head with rhetoric about recycling, global warming, or the wastefulness of over-consumption. Instead, she uses details--such as the way humans are employed to generate energy in this future world--to speculate the consequences of our current practices.

Pumzi is a must-see film. As part of the 17th Annual African Film Festival, Pumzi will be screening on Saturday, April 10, at 4:00 PM at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater (located on 165 W 65th Street). If you miss Pumzi in New York, you can catch this film at Sundance and other festivals worldwide.
