Change The World, Create Something!
The spirit of Jazz always ‘Ketches good vibes’, and we thought who better to speak to than the jazz vocalist who started her own record label ‘Ketch A Vibe’ records- Julie Dexter!
We caught up with British-born vocalist and songwriter, Atlanta based Julie Dexter before her concert at the Pizza Express in Soho during the London Jazz Festival 2011. We discussed her childhood influences, the meaning of jazz to her, her latest album ‘New Again’ and some of the work she is best known for: working with Gary Crosby and Courtney Pine.

Dexter’s alluring soulful jazz voice captivated the audience from the onset of her concert. Her gospel-inflected intensity coupled with jazz agility and her down to earth mannerisms held the late-show crowd in the palm of her hand – she could do no wrong. Julie Dexter’s sensational trio took us on a jazz-fusion journey with subtlety and soulfulness, which enthralled us even more. Her trio consisted of pianist and keyboard player, Nick Ramm, electric bassist, Neville Malcolm, and the exceptional drummer, Rod Youngs.
The audience were moved by Julie Dexter’s delivery of playful high notes, her nature and wit as she enticed us with a bit of every soulful music style – from Afro beat, funky to presenting the Beatles and Marvin Gaye with some true reggae vibes. Before the night ended Julie Dexter performed, a slow rendition of her single ‘Ketch a vibe’ from her second album ‘Dexterity’ and I must say it was simply beautiful. We were left inspired and motivated with the last performance of ‘Who I am’ from her latest self-penned album ‘New Again’.
Just Vibe!
