A Conversation with Nucomme on The Legendary Betty Davis

There are those few artist who’s very way of being is a beautiful spectacle. To know New York based songstress Nucomme is to know a woman who seems completely free, raw, unabashedly bold and undeniably talented. When SocietyHAE got wind that Nucomme (along with help from her group of producers called simply The Curators) was headlining a multimedia show tributing the life of living funk legend Betty Davis, we just knew we had to get the inside scoop.

Check Nucomme and crew at Little Field Sunday Night.

In interview with Nucomme as told to n’dada vaz

Betty was decades ahead of her time. In the early ‘70s, she was already raunchy, raw, and outrageous. She told more truths than America was ready for. Forget Madonna, Betty still is much more honest and raw about her sexuality than almost any performer out today. She spent the earlier part of the decade releasing three amazing albums with unflinching takes on love, sex, power, and gender roles. It’s sad that Betty was mostly known as being the ex-wife and muse of Miles Davis when in reality she was a contemporary of Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, and most notably, a key innovator of jazz funk fusion. Our goal with this project is to tell the story of a remarkable woman who influenced more of pop culture and music than anyone gives her credit for. While she disappeared from the music scene in the mid-‘70s, her musical and stylistic influence reverberates on Miles Davis’ classic Bitches Brew and is still evident in artists like Madonna and Prince.

Any advice for music makers on the come up?

So many things. Keep plugging away. Success doesn't happen overnight. Approach your craft with just as much professionalism, more in fact, that if you were working for someone else. The good thing is that technology is making it possible for independent artists to get their music out there without having to go through the record industry machine.

Bonus question - What's next for You?

Take the show on the road!

For kicks we asked Nucomme the 10 Famous Questions from 'Inside The Actors Studio"
We call this segment "Inside the Indie Artist' Cypher"

Obnoxious honking horns. And baaad music.
