Change The World, Create Something!

As his twitter profile attests Conscious is an artist of many facets. MC, painter, poet, writer, blogging guru and actor the Bronx New York City bred artist stars in this weeks featured short LITTLE MAN by award winning writer and director Amyn Kaderali (www.amynkaderali.com).

an interview with Conscious as told to n’dada vaz

‘This was my first time on screen. See, I kinda of fell into acting. It was around 96-97. I was in these advanced English classes in high school and somehow I heard about this audition. So I go down there and do my thing and don't think anymore about it. A few days later I get a call that I got the part of Rodney.

Besides the obvious story of a young man having to grow up faster than he has to, I think a large part of why the film was so successful was because of what the director was able to naturally capture visually. We shot for two days way out in Brooklyn in the middle of a blizzard. You can almost feel that late 90’s grimy, cold energy.

I watched the film again recently and it made me think about two things. One, nobody is above asking for help. The second was how there are so many things that kids have to compete with. A lot has changed and now today with technology there are so many different variables...childhood is not that simple anymore. For this young man birthdays are never going to be the same.

Working with Amyn definitely was momentum to pursue my art. Recently I was speaking with Malcolm Barrett [who plays Lem Hewitt on ABC’s Better Off Ted] and he said ’Acting is something you have to commit to. If you want to do this, its pretty much all you can do.’

Acting is an art form that you have to dive into but whatever your medium is, independent artist, please practice your craft. Study and learn before you do anything. Make sure it’s your passion. Coat tail. Find a mentor. There is info available at your fingertips.’

For kicks we asked Conscious the 10 Famous Questions from 'Inside The Actors Studio"
We call this segment "Inside the Indie Artist' Cypher"

1. What is your favorite hiphop quote-able?

Talib Kweli - "Your only scared to die if you ain’t living right"

2. What is your least favorite slang word?

I got so many that I hate. ‘I’m on my grind.’ That just annoys the hell out of me cause everybody isn’t. Oh and ‘Swag, swagger, swagalicious, anything that has ‘swag’ in it. That’s probably the worse.

3. What turns you on?

Stimulating conversation. Art. I was at the MOMA recently and I was looking at this peace of art and it was speaking to me. Something about textures and color and things that heighten my vibration.

4. What turns you off?

Smoking cigarettes...females that smoke. And I really don't like drunkardness.

5. What sound or noise do you love?

The ambient sounds of nature. windy days, The park early in the morning, thunder.

6. What sound or noise do you hate?

I’m not fond of car alarms . and the sound of cats crying in the middle of the night freak me out.

7. What is your favorite curse word?

I’m trying not to curse.

8. What profession other than being an indie artist would you like to attempt?

Stand up comedian. I’m moderately funny.

9. What profession would you NEVER ever want to do?

The guy who cleans up the peep show room. No janitorial work in there. No peep show maintenance. Nope.

10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

‘You were right!’
