REVIEW: Janelle Monae -- "The ArchAndroid"

@janellemonae Many of us have waited almost three years since Janelle Monae's EP Metropolis Suite I of IV: The Chase was released. Along the way, we've been thrilled at her live shows by her unbridled energy. She's someone who leaves it all on the stage. But, I always wondered how she'd follow the EP up. Could she carry the whole Cindi Mayweather storyline through an entire album? Would she? More…See More

REVIEW: Earl Greyhound -- "Suspicious Package"

At first, you’re not sure you’re actually listening to an Earl Greyhound album.“Eyes of Cassandra (Part 1)” is so unlike the muscular, guitar-driven sound that characterized much of their previous album, Soft Targets. And before the song transitions into Part 2, there’s this segue that reminds me of a Brazilian shuffle, all drums and moans.None of this is a bad thing. What you get with Suspicious…See More

"Window Seat" or Much Badu About Nothing

Around the internet, folks have been buzzing about Erykah Badu's latest video "Window Seat," in which the singer strips naked as she strolls through downtown Dallas. And the reviews, from what I've seen, have been mostly positive, with many people praising Badu for her bravery. It was riveting to see this black woman's progress down a Dallas street. The gauzy, Zapruder-style filmmaking gave it a…See More

REVIEW: Sade -- "Soldier of Love"

Like most people, I’m quick to say, “I love Sade!”Thing is, I’ve never thought of the music this band creates as romantic. They’re beautiful creations, yes. But what’s appealed to me is the core of melancholy that informs the music. Within the beauty you’re forced to wrestle with many emotions: Loss. Regret. Connections missed. The passage of time. Evolving (or devolving) relationships. The struggle…See More

Black rock evangelist | Music entrepreneur

I'm Rob Fields and I started BoldAsLove.us to provide a platform for people--particularly African Americans--to discover Black rock music. I also want to explore how the increasing prominence of Black rock is impacting Black imagination and how we conceive of and understand ourselves in the world. I believe that Black rock can save Black culture and ultimately change this country for the better.

So what I focus on is providing context for audiences to understand and enjoy what they're hearing. For artists, I'll also get into ways that you can make Black rock matter in the marketplace (can't help thinking this way: I'm a marketer through and through).

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

How did I get started in Black rock? Here's the short version: I got turned onto Black rock from my early days in PR, when I ran PR for the Black Rock Coalition. From there, I went onto artist management and represented alternative artists such as trombonist and Groove Collective alum Josh Roseman and cornettist and M-Base co-founder Graham Haynes.
